As we pause in our daily work and relaxation to remember this day as the 89th birthday of Elvis Presley, this biographical note from the King comes to mind.
It was not apparent to everyone in the world that Elvis was soon to turn the world on its ear while he shrugged through his days at Humes High School in Memphis. He received a grade of "C" in music at that school, and was told by his music teacher that he had no aptitude for singing songs.
He brought his Sears guitar to school and favored his class with a rendition of the classic country song "Keep Them Cold Icy Fingers Off Of Me." No one thought to record that, but here's a version of that song by Pee Wee King And His Golden West Cowboys.
It's great that E's birthday fell on a Monday this year. This should give Congress the idea to make this commemoration a national holiday every year. Families will enjoy spending the long Elvis Weekend together listening to his records and watching his movies and dining on some of his favorite foods.
