It will come as no surprise to anyone who's known me for more than ten minutes that I am unyielding in my devotion to the rules of proper grammar.
So much so, that I bristle when people write words such as "anyone whose known me." Right is right and wrong isn't right.
On one of the grammar fan sites I follow, someone mentioned being disappointed by finding these words in one of their page-turner potboilers:
People hopped right on the issue, pointing out that if her son had not been there, she never would have said "leaving I staring..."
But one woman wrote to say she would always say "my son and I," because she thinks it's correct to say that.
So here we are, at the well-traveled intersection of What's Right & What I Believe. It's still a free country, so we're entitled to our beliefs.
Go ahead and believe that it's fine to rob banks or drive at 90 mph in residential areas or vandalize the property of others. Just don't do it, and you'll be fine!
