A Flood of Comments

Yesterday, our area, our state, got a ton and a half of rain. This was predicted by every meteorologist, and having heard that the storm would hit hard around noon (at 11:54 AM here, you'd have thought it was midnight around here), Baltimore County government made the decision to send non-essential employees, personnel not involved with storm emergency management, home at 2:30.

Predictably enough, as the deep rain caused flooding and water rescues and chaos from DC to Manhattan, rescue personnel and police were busy as could be, while experts pecked away on keyboards and phones about how foolish the county was to get people off the roads before the commotion.

Wanna make a bet? If, God forbid, someone had worked up 'til regular quitting time, and been trapped by rising waters on the way home, don't you think people would have said, "Why weren't they allowed to go home early? Why oh why can't people just use reason and compassion?"

I'm here saying two things: One, it makes sense to be prudent and careful and cautious, and B, you can count on second-guessers second-guessing.

No two ways about it.
