Digging The Past

53 years ago, Conway Twitty (may he RIP) had one of his dozens of country hits with the plaintive Fifteen Years Ago, a heartwrencher about a guy who misses his old love from that long ago.

I bring this up because last month Emily Bzdyk, a volunteer at the Calvert Marine Museum on Maryland's beautiful western shore, happened upon a dolphin skull that is fifteen...million...years old.

Fossils are often found in the wild
Ms Bzdyk was at Calvert Cliffs State Park when she found that old skull, which is said to be in a remarkably good state of preservation for something that old.

In Southern Maryland, where dinosaurs roamed free years ago, it's not all that remarkable to find marine mammal fossils, but Stephen Groff of the Calvert County Marine Museum says this one is in really fine shape: “Rarely are they in this good of condition.”

So much so, in fact, that Mr Groff figures this skull might be from a dolphin species we never even knew about before! They have to dry it out and clean it up real nice first, maybe put on a coat of Turtle Wax to really spiff it up.
