Early in the morning yesterday, as the dawn broke over eastern Baltimore County, th3 best side of America showed itself. And how appropriate that the event I'm mentioning happened on the fifth anniversary of one of the darkest days in our history.
It was around 7 AM when a dwelling fire was licking its way through a townhouse on Kosoak Ct. in Middle River. Ring camera videos showed neighbors running to the scene, and others stopping their cars to get out and help.
The residents of the house, a mother and her two kids, are safe because, just like in the movies, the kids were lowered from that upper bedroom window to the arms of rescuers by using the frame of the bay window as a slide. Someone threw a ladder up, that's how the mother was saved, and the fire department arrived soon.
We have seen a tendency for people to see events like this, crimes, fires, auto wrecks, whatever, and do nothing. It's good to see this. You hate to see people's houses on fire, but it's a nice sign that others came running to help.
