I'm sure most of you saw something on the news about the shooting at Baltimore's Morgan State University last week. Five people were shot, none fatally, and as of this writing (as they say) the police have no idea who did it, although they have circulated video of "persons of interest" who were seen on campus cameras just before the shooting started.
An all-too-familiar scene |
Which proves nothing, of course, and even if the victims knew who the shooters were, they are apparently not saying anything. Again, we don't know hardly anything just yet, but the news talked to lots of the students and people on campus. I could understand the fear that many of them related, as they mentioned that Homecoming Activities were all cancelled or delayed while the investigation went on. I mean, for all they knew, the shooters were still around them, and who knew when they might strike again?
Which is the question that one female freshman asked on the news. She said (paraphrasing) this is the third homecoming in a row that this sort of thing has happened, and since they knew that, why couldn't the administration prevent it?
I guess she's 18 and is just coming to grips with a problem that has gripped this country for 18 decades at least. People have guns and they damn well want to shoot them off when they damn well want to.
As Yogi Berra said, "If people don't want to come out to the ballgames, how are you gonna stop them?"
Same way: if people want to go around shooting their guns, how are you gonna stop them?
