Call me later

Prank phone calls have come a long way from the days when some guys I was in pretty thick with would call the same number at different times for a week, asking to speak to Norman, and then after a week, they called again and said, "This is Norman, any calls for me?"

Before Caller ID and all that goes with it, the world of prank calls, asking for "Mr Jass, first name Hugh" was wide open. I really thought no one was even up to those old hijinx until I read that a radio/TV reporter out in Sioux Falls made a joke phone call using the personal cell number of the governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem.

This is not Brick Heck! It's Austin Goss.
Stanley County Sheriff Brad Rathbun said Austin Goss surrendered last week and we released on his own  recognizance. Goss had been the capitol bureau reporter for Dakota News Now but they tied a can to him after all this came out.

He's charged with a misdemeanor: making threatening, harassing, or misleading contacts. He could get a year in the hoosegow and pay $2,000 in fines.

Dakota News Now and KOTA Territory News released a joint statement saying that Goss’s employment was all over, and saying they were “unaware of Mr. Goss’s activities and deeply regret the lack of judgment he showed.”

The probable cause in the statement of facts mentions a recipient of a “harassing phone call," and a special agent with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation mentioned that the call came from a website called PrankDial, which the prankster used to make it look like the call was coming from Noem’s cellphone.

When the call was answered, the recipient heard a pre-recorded message accusing the person of stealing boxes of vaccines from the Mafia.

Not that I know anything about all this, you understand, but back in the day, they made prank phone calls and they made them funny!

This Goff lost his job over this and I think he should have. For one thing, he's probably over 12.

And how does he apply for a new job? What does he put in that little box marked "Reason for leaving last position"?
